Where can I use contactless payments?

Contactless payments are now accepted on board most NJ TRANSIT buses and all light rail stations.

What payment methods are accepted using NJ TRANSIT Tap & Ride?

NJ TRANSIT currently accepts contactless bank cards and mobile wallets.

What fares can I purchase with contactless payment?

At this time, NJ TRANSIT is accepting contactless payments for adult one-way fares only. In the future, additional fare types will be available.

Can I use my transit/commuter benefit card with contactless payments?

If the card issued by your transit benefit provider is contactless, you can use it on NJ TRANSIT buses and at light rail stations. Please contact your transit benefit provider for more information.

Is there a fee for using contactless payment?

No, there are no fees associated with using contactless payments.

Can I use my contactless payment to pay for additional people?

No. At this time, each customer must use a separate contactless payment or mobile wallet.

What if I transfer between buses or light rail and want to pay the fare using contactless payment?

At this time, contactless payments support adult one-way fares only. Transfers and other additional fare types will be added in the future.

Are discounted fares available with contactless payments?

At this time, contactless payments support adult one-way fares only. Additional fare types will be added in the future.

Can I ride NJ TRANSIT bus and light rail if I do not have a contactless bank card?

Yes. All existing fare payments/media continue to be valid on NJ TRANSIT.

Can I use my contactless payment to pay for additional people traveling with me?

No. At this time each customer must have a separate contactless payment or mobile wallet.

HOW TO USE CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS

How do I use my contactless payment on NJ TRANSIT?

Look for the contactless symbol (example shown below) on NJ TRANSIT validators as you board the bus or enter the light rail station and tap your contactless payment card or mobile device to pay the fare.

What are validators?

Contactless validators are devices located on board buses and at light rail station entry points and are used to accept contactless payments.

How do I use my contactless payment when traveling by bus?

Use the Tap & Ride to pay your adult one-way fare on-board NJ TRANSIT buses using contactless payment cards.

  • As you board, tap your contactless credit or debit card on the on-board validator.
  • Provide the number of zones you wish to travel to the bus operator for the proper fare.
  • Take a seat and enjoy your ride – it's that easy!

How do I use my contactless payment when traveling by light rail?

Use the new Tap & Ride payment option to pay your adult one-way light rail fare at Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail, or River LINE stations.

  • At the light rail station platform, tap your contactless payment card at the validator to pay the adult one-way fare.
  • The card is valid for your one-way fare during the usual validation period.
  • Board the light rail train and enjoy the ride!
If a fare enforcement officer asks you to show proof of payment, tap the same contactless card used to pay your fare on a fare enforcement scanner.

Why doesn't my contactless bank card work?

If your contactless bank card is not working, it may be due to one of the following reasons:

  • Your card issuer may have declined payment.
  • The card may be damaged or expired.
  • Due to insufficient funds, the card is suspended or temporarily blocked.
Contact your card issuer for more details.

MANAGING MY ACCOUNT

How do I view my trips?

To view your trips, visit the NJ TRANSIT customer web portal and enter your contactless card number or account ID.

What is my Account ID and where can I find it?

Your Account ID can be found on your credit card statement. See image below.

What should I do if my card is suspended or temporarily blocked due to insufficient funds?

You can pay your outstanding balance using a credit/debit card. Log onto the NJ TRANSIT customer web portal and select "Pay Outstanding Balance." Follow the onscreen steps to clear the hold. The same card will become your primary account payment. You must re-activate your original card if you pay your outstanding balance with a different card.

Why do I have to re-activate my contactless card?

You must re-activate your contactless payment card if you pay an outstanding balance with a card different from the one in the system.

How do charges appear on my card statement?

Your fares for each day are combined and submitted for processing at the end of each day. A single charge on your card statement will reflect all trips taken that day.

There are charges on my statement that I don't recognize. What are they?

Depending on the payment method used, you may see a preauthorization amount in the customer portal or your card account. The preauthorization is a nominal temporary hold during payment processing. Your fares for the day are combined and submitted for processing at the end of each day. A single charge on your statement will reflect all trips taken for that day with no additional charges.

The Basics…

What is a FARE-PAY Card?

FARE-PAY is an NJ TRANSIT account based reloadable contactless card that allows you to load value or tickets/passes to pay your fare for NJ TRANSIT Bus and/or Newark Light Rail travel.

Fare-Pay card. The card has an abstract orange, pink and navy blue pattern on it and the text The easiest way to pay. The fastest way to ride! written on it under the name of the card.

Where can I get a FARE-PAY Card?

You can purchase a reloadable FARE-PAY card from NJ TRANSIT Ticket Vending Machines at all Newark Light Rail stations and at Allwood, Mothers, Willowbrook, and Route 23 bus park and rides.

How much is the FARE-PAY Card?

During this phase of the program there is no charge for the FARE-PAY card, however, please keep the card for future use.

What tickets/passes can I add to my FARE-PAY card?

You can add Bus and Light Rail monthly passes and/or ten-trip tickets to your FARE-PAY card account.

How much value can I add to a FARE-PAY card?

You can add $5 to $500 of value to your FARE-PAY card in whole dollar increments. The maximum value stored on a FARE-PAY card account at any given time is $500.

How do I use my FARE-PAY value on buses?

Simply tap your FARE-PAY card at the validator on board the bus and inform the operator of your destination to ensure the correct amount is charged.

How do I use my FARE-PAY value to travel on Newark Light Rail?

Simply tap your FARE-PAY card at the platform validator and a one-way adult fare will be deducted from your account. You may have to show your FARE-PAY card to the Light Rail Inspector.

Are reduced fares accepted when paying with the FARE-PAY card?

Yes, NJ TRANSIT is accepting FARE-PAY for adult, senior/disabled one-way fares and Newark light rail underground fare.

Newark Light Rail Customers: You must register your FARE-PAY card for the reduced fare or Newark Light Rail underground fare option, visit your online profile at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal.

Bus Customers:Bus Customers: You have the option to register your FARE-PAY card for the reduced fare or inform the bus operator when boarding that you are traveling with a reduced fare.

Where can I add tickets/passes or value to my FARE-PAY account?

You can add tickets/passes or value to your FARE-PAY account: online at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal or from NJ TRANSIT Ticket Vending Machines at all Newark Light Rail stations and at Allwood, Mothers, Willowbrook, and Route 23 bus park and rides.

You also have the option to add value through our customer call center at 862.229.7139.

Can I have tickets/passes and value on my FARE-PAY card?

Tickets/passes will be used from your FARE-PAY card account before cash value. For example, if you have a pass or tickets on your fare card, it must be depleted before using store value.

Can I use my FARE-PAY card to pay for multiple riders?

Yes, if you have stored value only, you can pay for up to four passengers.

The validator showed a 'low balance' message, what should I do?

You can add value to your FARE-PAY account online at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal, from NJ TRANSIT Ticket Vending Machines at all Newark Light Rail stations and at Allwood, Mothers, Willowbrook, and Route 23 bus park and rides, or through the Customer Call Center at 862.229.7139.

Where can I check my balance?

You can check the balance of your FARE-PAY card online after you register at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal , from NJ TRANSIT Ticket Vending Machines at all Newark Light Rail stations and at Allwood, Mothers, Willowbrook, and Route 23 bus park and rides or at 862.229.7139.

How can I contact FARE-PAY Customer Service?

The FARE-PAY Customer Call Center can be reached at 862-229-7139, Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 5:30pm and weekends/holidays from 8:30am to 5:00pm. (Eastern Time).

Can I pay for a transfer with FARE-PAY?

With FARE-PAY, there is no need to purchase a transfer from the operator. Simply tap on the validator of the transferring bus or on the platform validator at your light rail station and the transfer fare will be deducted from your fare card value. If you are transferring to a bus, inform the operator of your destination and the transfer fare will be deducted from your fare card value.

A transfer will be applied if you are traveling:

  1. Within two hours from your initial tap
  2. Within the state of New Jersey
  3. For a one-zone ride only

Can I pay for a continuing trip with FARE-PAY?

Yes, as long as you have value on your Fare-Pay card account, simply tap on the validator and inform the operator that you want a continuing trip. Then use your receipt for the subsequent bus.

How do I use FARE-PAY monthly pass on Light Rail?

Simply board the Light Rail Vehicle and show your FARE-PAY card to the inspector when requested.

Registering Your FARE-PAY Card

Why should I register my FARE-PAY Card?

There are several benefits to registering your FARE-PAY card.

  1. Your account balance and/or tickets are protected if your card is lost or stolen.
  2. Discounts are available to you based on your rider class once added to your profile (i.e. senior/disabled, Newark Light Rail underground fare) and are automatically applied when you tap at a reader.
  3. The customer web portal is available for account management, transactions, and trip review/history, refunds as well as many other self-service tools, allowing you to manage your account quickly and easily.
  4. You have access to the auto-reload feature, where you can set-up recurring monthly passes or value.

Click the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal to register your FARE-PAY card.

How do I register my FARE-PAY Card?

If you have an existing Mobile app account or web ticketing account, you can sign in at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal and select FARE-PAY to register your card.

New customers can register online at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal to create an account and register your card.

Can I register multiple FARE-PAY cards to my account?

Yes, you can add multiple FARE-PAY cards to your account.

Do I have to register my FARE-PAY Card?

Registering your card is not required, however there are many benefits to registering your card. See "Why should I register my FARE-PAY card?"

How will my FARE-PAY information be kept private?

FARE-PAY Account Management

What service tools are available with my FARE-PAY account management?

Once your FARE-PAY card is registered at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal, you will have online access to your account and through the automated customer call center at 862-229-7139. Access to the following account management tools are available to you after registering your card:

  1. Add value
  2. Buy tickets (monthly/ten-trip)
  3. Set up auto reload for tickets/passes or value
  4. Select rider class in your user profile for reduced fare
  5. Selection of unique fares (Underground fare ticket selection for Newark Light Rail)
  6. Quickly check account balance
  7. View past trips and transaction history
  8. Balance protection if your card is lost, stolen or damaged
  9. Register multiple cards under a single account
  10. Refund tickets/passes

How do I set up auto reload on my FARE-PAY account?

Once your FARE-PAY card is registered, you can set up auto reload at any time. To reload a pass or value to the card, click the "auto reload" button from the FARE-PAY home screen, choose the 'Value' or 'Tickets' option and follow a few easy steps. It's that simple.

What happens if my FARE-PAY Card is lost, stolen or damaged?

If your card is registered, you can log into your account and report your card lost/stolen. Once you register your new card on your account, your previous balance will be updated/associated with the new replacement card.

If your FARE-PAY card was not registered, you can purchase a new one from NJ TRANSIT Ticket Vending Machines at Newark Light Rail stations and at Allwood, Mothers, Willowbrook, and Route 23 bus park and rides.

How to refund a product on your Fare-Pay card account?

Once your FARE-PAY card is registered at the NJ TRANSIT Customer Portal, you will have online access to your account. Once logged in, select the farecard number associated with the pass/ticket you want to refund and go to transaction history. If the ticket is available for refund, you will see the refund icon under your ticket transaction tab. Refunds will be processed based on NJ TRANSIT's current refund policy. Please note that farecard value is non-refundable.
